How Much Sugar Are in These Crackers?

After leaving the gym one morning, I stopped by Shoprite my local grocery store to pick up a few items.

After paying for my groceries, I am about to walk out the door when an elderly man stopped me.  As he approached me, he held a box of crackers in his hand. Pointing his finger at the label he says…

Excuse me honey, can you tell me how much sugar are in these crackers?

I was not wearing my reading glasses, so to read the label and to see the sugar content, I had to focus really hard. 🤓

Sir, according to the label, the crackers contain only one gram of sugar per serving, but if you are watching your sugar intake, I don’t recommend you eat them?

Really?   Why is that?

I point to the first ingredient, Enriched Flour.  “Do you see this here?”
I try to give him a quick synopsis and tell him that the white flour is a starch, which isn’t the best choice for him. I explain that the starches are going to eventually break down in his body into simple sugar.

He is shocked and says he is not going to buy them.  I tell him to look for “whole grains.”

Of course there is so much to it then eating whole grains but I did not have the time to say all that I wanted and needed to say.

My time was limited but I desperately wanted to take his hand and walk him aisle by aisle through the store to show him healthier options.

Food labels are tricky and deceptive. The labels are colorful and are strategically designed to get our attention to buy their products.  It  seems that every aspect of this country is about profit.

Healthy living is sacrificed for greed and for profit.

Just look at Martin Shkreli.  The jerk… I mean CEO of Turing Pharmaceuicals.  He jacked up the price of a prescription drug designed to help save the lives of HIV patients.  He tried to increase the price from $13.50 per pill to $750.00 per pill!  What the heck!!

GREED!!

The intentional trickery and lies told by food manufacturers is disturbing.  Consumers must read food labels; however, the education does not stop with reading labels. The process of educating oneself is ongoing and there are many valuable sources available online and in print.  Below are a few sites to check out but there are many.

I also enjoy reading the free magazines from The Vitamin Store.  Several  magazines are located at the register and they are full of resourceful information.

As I said in the beginning, I wish I had the time to walk the man and others like him through the store to help them to find healthier alternatives.  Hmm…. Maybe that’s something I could do on the side.

Just remember, don’t be so quick to believe the pretty little lies they tell you on the colorful packaging.  Dig deeper to find what’s really in the food.   Just because the words “natural,” “low calorie,” “organic,” or “sugar free” are printed on a package, doesn’t mean that is true. Sadly, food manufacturers and companies can make all kinds of outlandish and untrue statements about their products.  The practice should be unlawful but it is not.

Some of these companies are such blatant liars, I can’t stand it!  If you stand close enough to me in the grocery store, you can overhear me saying, “liar! Liar!”   Lol!  I’m laughing but it is true.

My rule of thumb is if an item has too many ingredients listed, for the most part, I leave it alone.  If you don’t already know, there is a large amount of the first ingredient listed on a label.  So when you see sugar as one of the first, second, or third ingredients written in anyone of it’s 61 forms, toss it pack on the shelf.

Yes!!  According to Sugar Science, there are “at least 61 different names for sugar listed on food labels. I didn’t know that!  Some of the most common names are:

Sucrose

High-fructose corn syrup

Barley malt

Dextrose

Maltose

Rice syrup

Americans consume 66 pounds of added sugar each year, on average.

Added sugar is hiding in 74% of packaged food.

Okay, my sugar rant is over. I could go on and on, but I will end with a friendly reminder to read the food labels and educate yourself.   Don’t cheat yourself by putting bad stuff in your body.  The body is like an automobile, the better you care for it, the better your body will perform for you.

For the most part, the better you care for yourself, the better you will look and feel.  🙂

Thanks for stopping by and remember to keep it moving!

Tug-A-war In The Kitchen

Two weeks ago I cooked baked ziti for my family.  This week it’s authentic baked mac & cheese.

While they enjoy the dish and look forward to traditional meals, I feel like a heel for feeding it to them.

Some of the meal are loaded with the unhealthy fats.  Whenever possible, I substitute with “low fat” this, “low sodium” that, Non -GMO Verified, ingredients and more. So although, I do what I can to prepare healthy meals, mom and hubby are grown folks and I have no right to make them adapt to my eating styles. I can only encourage and educate them and hope they make healthier choices.

I had a moment while running through the aisle of Shoprite.  Lol!!  I like using the new smaller carts with two baskets; one on top and one on the bottom.  I was filling my cart with one gallon water jugs and got a glimpse of the contrast of the basket contents.

cart1There was no more low fat cheese; cheese was on sale.  They like the mac & cheese better with the whole milk. I can’t find whole wheat pasta in elbows. And the corn muffins, well, their delicious!  Lol!

cart2

Water. Chicken breast (I wish it were organic).  Flaxseed. Brown rice. Black Rice (new to me).  I don’t know what this black rice is going to taste like, but I’m always up for trying new foods.

mac and cheeseThey will be grubbin on a scrupulous (Yes, I tasted it…OMG! It’s delicious) pan of mac & cheese, while I experiment with great anticipation, a plate of hot fluffy black rice.  🙂

I could very easily eat the mac and cheese with dinner, but I won’t.  Why?

  1. Goals!  written-goalsIn 2015 I will compete again, so I’m on a mission.

  2. My body no longer appreciates the cheese, milk, and the pasta, so I’d rather not suffer through the consequences. Feeling bloated, gassy, and down right uncomfortable.
  3. I understand the health benefits of avoiding certain foods and eating clean, so all is good. 🙂

Best believe the next meal I cook for my fam is going to be healthier!  Lol!!  To help me (mentally) and them (health wise), I try to rotate and vary meals.

I have to go check on the black rice and finish cooking vegetables (broccoli and kale) for dinner.

Enjoy the day; make it a good one! 🙂

A Second Chance

Going to the gym and forgetting my purse is becoming a habit.  A bad habit. This morning I was so focused on getting to the gym that I did it again.

Five minutes away from the gym, I realized I did not have my purse, but I wasn’t about to return home.  That would have cut into my workout.  I would rather take my chances and get stop by the local police.  Slow your roll girl!  I made sure to follow the speed limit, especially in the 25 mph zones.

My day blew by!

Nearly two hours working mostly on my back and a little shoulder.  I have no idea why, but today a couple of folks wanted to stop and chat.  Me… Mrs. Chit Chat was trying to get through my workout.  Ear buds neatly tucked in, head boppin and all… it did not stop them from getting my attention.

One was a couple.  The guy age 65 (he told me), who looked every bit 10 years plus younger.  Nice body!  I could tell he knew what he was doing in the gym.  The girl… well… nice. Huge 80’s style hair, very thin, and bright eyes and pretty smile.   The gentleman complimented me on my physique.

Moving from the cable equipment to the back machines, a 50ish looking male with a solid body stops me… his white hair gave his age away.

“I’ve been watching you!  Your form is excellent! You are doing everything right!  Keep doing what you are doing kiddo!”

“Kiddo!”  Lol!  He has not idea I’m well over 40.  Love it! I thank him and go to put my ear buds back in.  He leans over to tell me that he is or was (I forget) a personal trainer for years.  It took me like 4 or 5 attempts before he finally stopped talking.   Although I did respond, I needed to get back to my workout.

Yes, I finally got through it.  I got home by noon, just in time to meet “Arnold” who runs a home cleaning service.  I need someone to clean my home.  I can’t do it anymore.. truthfully, I don’t want to do anymore, so I’m not. We were suppose to me to discuss my needs, prices, and availability.

I race in the door, quickly fix my post workout meal (oats & eggs) and wolf it down.  15 minutes later.  Where’s Arnold?

I can’t wait, I’ve got things to do. In 2 1/2 hours, I did Shoprite, Bed Bath & Beyond, BJ’s, Macy’s, and the dreaded Walmart.  Hold up…  I don’t hate Walmart, but there are certain times that you do not shop at Walmart in my area and I was in the heart of it. But since I have a busy week, I put my music in my ear and braved the madness.  Lol!

Once home, I cooked a big pot of chilly and prepped a pot of kale.  I called the nail salon. It was 3:45 p.m., the salon’s last appointment was 4:30.  I turned the chili on low and tell hubby to watch it.  It’s Sunday afternoon football; that was a dangerous move.  I was smart enough not to turn the kale on. I called him on my way home from the salon to turn the pot on.

I raced out the door 10 minutes later and got to the nail place at 4:16.  The best thing about driving on a Sunday afternoon is that, at least here in South Jersey, everybody is somewhere watching football.  The roads were clear.  Thank God!

nails

Yay I got my nails done!  Those sparkles on the black polish are still growing on me, but guess what.  This chica is #happy about getting my nails done today.

#100 Happy Days Challenge #Day 26

Question.  How do you not engage in conversation at they gym?  The social butterfly that I am, loves to chat; however, on most days, I need to skip the chatter.  Should I buy BIGGER headphones?  Any  tips?  Oh please do share.

Geez… do you know what time it is?  Oh gosh… it’s past my bed time.  I really must go.

I hope you had a great weekend.  I did.  B’Dazzle’s JV football team beat another team 36-0!  Sweet!  He did his job as nose guard very well.

Okay.. I’m going this time.  For real!  Lol!

Oh  wait… at 6:54 p.m. Arnold (the owner of the cleaning service) texts me the following:

Wow, I just remember(ed) now, supposed to be there noon time today, completely forgot.  It’s Arnold.  Apology, do you want me to go (come) another time?  Really sorry.

OMG!!  LOL!!  Arnold came highly recommended by a neighbor. Everyone makes mistakes.  I believe in second chances, so I did reschedule. If he forgets this time, it’s a wrap and I will move down my list of recommended cleaning companies.

Serious… Sweet dreams!  🙂

Finding Balance

Happy Sunday!

If any of you are Philadelphia Eagles fans, I feel for you!  My hubby, a long tine Eagles fan is catching hell from his so-called friends today.  Oh my!  Being an Eagles fan is not easy.

Today is rest day for me.  Well… not exactly rest from everything, but rest from weight training and CrossFit.  Yesterday was leg day at the gym and I am a little sore.  I know my legs are the strongest muscles on my body.  At their sorest (if there is such a word) they are never as sore as my arms and shoulders post workout.

My blog description talks about trying to find “balance” in my life.   It’s tough, but I am not complaining.  I just make it work.

Though I woke at 8:30 a.m. this morning, I lounged around for a few and cleaned out my junky nightstand draw.  The “lounging” around set me back, but I’ve come to accept the fact that setbacks are simply part of my norm.

Typically it goes something like having a to-do list of about 10 items or more. There’s no way in hell, everything is getting crossed off the list.  So I prioritize what’s most important and chip away at it like that.  Whatever is left on the list, I will tackle another day.

Lounging recharges my battery.  One good night of 7-8 hours sleep and waking without an alarm clock at 4:30 a.m. puts me in the energy bunny mode.  I go on and on and on….  Lol!

As I write this, I am also cooking my meals for the week and figuring out tonight’s dinner for my family.

Parts of my “mini” grocery haul still sit on the kitchen counter.

While shopping this afternoon, my son discovered this nail in my tire. I need to get his fixed ASAP!

While shopping this afternoon, my son discovered this nail in my tire. I need to get his fixed ASAP!  I hope my tire isn’t flat tomorrow morning.

SuperSoul Sunday plays in the background and I leisurely move from computer to stove, to oven, to fridge and so on…. Y’all cookers out there know exactly what I’m doing.

I just finished tossing my steel oats in the crock-pot, white baked potatoes (for my peeps) and plain sweet potatoes (all mine) in the oven.

Next on the list…. Ugh! Chicken drum sticks for my family and boneless, skinless chicken breast for me.  Ugh, because of the clean up after I’m done.  I bleach out every part of the kitchen sink and around it.  There will be no cross contamination in my kitchen!

I  haven’t made zucchini cakes in about a month, so I picked up four decent size ones at the produce store. During the winter months, medium to large size zucchini are hard to find in South Jersey.

What else?  Broccoli, broccoli rabe, mixed vegetables, a pot of quinoa, brown rice, and small whole wheat buck wheat pan cakes–  No syrup thank you.  A friend recently hipped me to these.  Yum!

I think that’s it.  There’s so much stuff on the counter, I could be missing some food.  🙂

Oh yeah, I have to slice up two fresh pineapples.  I hate doing this, but I like to keep fresh pineapples in the fridge.  They are great in smoothies and are good for you.  Read more about pineapples here.

Well, I really need to get back to my cooking.  I will chat with you later.  Tomorrow is a busy day.  After work, I’m headed straight to the gym, then later, B’Dazzle (my son) has a basketball game.  The holidays are over and it’s back to the grind.

Talk to you later and thanks for stopping by!
