My mission in life is to not merely survive, but to thrive: and do so with passion, compassion, humor, and style. – Maya Angelou

I am enjoying Medium practice while I work hard at cooking meals for the week.  The cooking for the week is preparation that I have to do, so that I can attend CrossFit, workout, and continue to eat clean… well, as clean as possible.

Practice and Preparation at its best!

  • Warm Up:     Coaches Choice

    Mobility:       8 Min

    WOD: TRIO

    – 500M Row
    – 40 Air Squats
    -30 Sit Ups
    -20 Push-ups
    -10 Pull-ups

500 Meters didn’t seem like much.  Ha! Ha! I was very wrong!  Only after the first round, my legs felt like rubber bands.  As I moved on to the air squats my thighs were on fire! I reminded myself that the burn nets results– I listened to the music, found my rhythm and kept getting them in.

I forgot to record my time on my cell phone, but if I remember correctly, I completed the WOD in 13:36.  This was my best today, but I would like to try this WOD again on a different day–preferably in the morning. I’m certain I can do better.

Overall this was a good ending to a long work week. Next week I’ll return to CrossFit, but look forward to running this weekend.

    Sweet dreams!

    DU’s or Jump Tucks

    *20 Min Cap

I enjoyed the warm up today.  It was cool, interactive, broke up the routine, but very effective.

We’ve been doing a lot of jump tucks lately.  Well actually, the “we” is those of us who haven’t mastered the double-under’s.  None chooses tucks over double-under’s.  I’m just saying.

My Jump tucks are improving, but they’re still difficult to do and I so want to do the double-under’s instead.  I won’t give up.  I don’t give up.  I just keep trying.

Hubby took these pictures as I walked in the door today.  Yup.  Still smiling after a long day.  Why?  Because I got my workout on.  Yay!!

Every night I make lunch for the following day.  Lunch typically includes  chicken, turkey, plain yams, broccolini, a salad, a Gala apple, unsalted almonds, unsalted cashews, a banana, or other healthy left overs from the previous nights dinner. I also take water to work and my morning cup of java.

Every night I pack my workout clothes.  I know that once I get home, distractions will mostly likely stop me from attending CrossFit, so I plan ahead and go directly from work.

After this picture, I showered, wolfed down dinner and headed to Medium’s football practice til 8 p.m.

All is great and life is good!  Work with what you got!

At 6:15 in this morning, as I’m whizzing around the kitchen, I found myself trying to answer my son’s question:

“Mom, how do you ask someone out?”

No doubt, his question caught me off guard.   At soon-to-be 11, it still seems kinda early for a dating question.

“Someone?”  Oookaaay.    I ask if he has someone particular in mind.  He hesitates.  I casually remind him that we talk about everything—no secrets—no subject is off-limits.

“Well, there is this girl…”   He tells me her name.  I know who she is.

So back to the question, “How do you ask someone out?”  Heck, I’ve been out of the dating scene for many years!  Am I “qualified” to respond?  LOL!  Sure I am.  I am his mom.  I am going to teach him the right way to approach young women.

I glance over at my son.  The Cheerios in his bowl are floating around, guided by his spoon.  He is patiently waiting for my answer.

The words roll off my tongue something like this:

Well… before you ask her out, you need to make sure that you share similar values.  If she likes you, she’s probably going to be nice to you.  But watch carefully how she treats others.   Observe her to make sure that she is respectful, courteous, and a genuinely nice girl.

“She can’t smoke!!  I don’t want to go out with a girl who smokes!”  He declares.

I say, “Yeees!  Good!”  She ought to be a good student too.  You know, she cannot use drugs, must go to school, work hard, earn good grades, and stay out of trouble.

I’m thinking, “What did I miss?”  Virginity?  LOL!  Too soon for that!  I think I’ve covered the basics… for now.

Once you decide that she’s of good character and you’ve gotten to know her over time, and through daily conversation, and… you suspect the feelings are mutual, then you pop the question “Would you be my girlfriend?” or “Do you want to go out?”

So there is a possibility, that I may sound corny or hokey, but that’s how I put it out there to medium (He prefers “medium” over “little” man).  Anyway, I believe in plain old fashion straightforwardness and honesty, with no games.

For the fellas who are reading this, what do you think?  Please?  Give me a male’s perspective?  I can’t wait to hear hubby’s response.

I tried to get a clear definition of what “going out” meant to my son.   I don’t assume current day jargon and phrases to mean what they did years ago.  That’s an age revealing statement right?  But it’s true. “Going out” meant the same as it still does to me, asking her to be his girlfriend.

When I asked him more about her, my heart melted when he said,

    “She’s kind.”

Do you hear me, “SHE’S KIND!”

I’m raising a gentleman.  I love, love, love, his ability to recognize and appreciate compassion in someone.   Anyway, it turns out that the little lady is a classmate and is hospitalized.

I asked Medium man if he wanted to visit her in the hospital.  He does.  So we will find out if her parents are okay with a visit from a potential boyfriend.

Parental obligations kept me from CrossFit today, so I look forward to tomorrow’s class. I missed working out today.

    Sweet Dreams!

  • “Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t–you’re right.”

             -Henry Ford

Warm Up:     Coaches Choice (Which involved 600M of running & more)

    Mobility:       6 Min

    WOD:             “Row Gone Really Bad”

7 RDS   1 Min AMRAP of Each:

Cal Row + Air Squats 1 Min Rest In Between Each Round

    Then Do:

    50 DU’s or Jump Tucks
    12 Push Press (75/55)

    40 DU’s or Jump Tucks
    15 Push Press (75/55)
    30 DU’s or Jump Tucks
    9 Push Press (75/55)
    30 ABMAT Sit Ups

If you stick with CrossFit long enough, you will make discoveries about yourself.  When hubby texted me the WOD this morning, I didn’t know if I should thank him or fuss. Why? Because I had all day to think about my afternoon challenge.

I looked at the WOD and fell out laughing.  I sat at my desk and loudly repeated, “Really?  OMG!  Really?” and continued laughing aloud.  My colleague in the next office must have thought I lost my mind, but I wasn’t ready for this one.

As confident as I am about my abilities, even I had doubts about this WOD.  We all tend to do this at one time or another, which is so bad.  We mentally count ourselves out before we even give it a try.

As I mentally prepped for the afternoon, I knew one fact…  I needed to drink some coffee before this WOD.  Yeah, I know… this wasn’t the best option, but at 2:45 p.m., I saw no other options.

The coffee helped… the caffeine kicked in just in time for the 7 rounds of rowing and air squats.

    I focused.

    I breathed.

    I finished!!!!!

    Sweet Dreams.

  • We eat leftovers in my home.  From September to December, leftovers are a necessity.   A stark contrast to my childhood dinners.

Though daddy worked at Wheaton Plastics, a thriving, noisy, dusty, and hot factory that kept the residents of the little town of Mays Landing bustling, his pay wasn’t much.  Some years mom worked, but I still qualified for Head Start, a federal program for low-income families that prepares children for school.

Regardless, both of my parents were not fond of left overs. Hence, fresh meals everyday. LOL! Imagine that. Baked potatoes, fresh veggies, pasta, steak, but rarely seafood.  The notions may sound nice, but it is unrealistic for my family…  At least until I can afford a private chef.   LOL!

Fatigue set in after grocery shopping for the upcoming week, so I needed something simple, at least for the next two days.  Since the temps are hitting the 60’s and 70’s, it’s starting to feel like fall has arrived, so I’m cooking my first pot of chili of the season.  No beef! Turkey.

I was also tired because I walked the lovely Ocean City bridge again today.  Yesterday I ran the bridge.  Today my bestie from high school conquered her fear.  Just like me, she was terrified.  I reassured her that  would walk it and she did.  Occasionally I would stop her and turn her around.  I pointed out to her the height and distance we walked. She was amazed.

DB, I am so PROUD of you; you are walking all over your fears!!

Once again, ideal temps this morning made for any perfect outdoor activity. I am sad to see the summer go, but I am also enjoying the fall temperatures– they are refreshing.  Almost like a cool shower after a long distance run on a hot summer day.

I must go now and finish preparing for my work week.

Me and hubby enjoy fresh pineapples in our smoothies. Mother also likes pineapples. I need to buy at least two per week.
    20130922-182037.jpg
I filled the fruit basket with Gala apples, bananas, and avocados.
    20130922-182059.jpg
These dark grapes from Sam’s Club are very sweet. Yes, they contain sugar, but at least it’s natural sugar. Tailor enjoys the grapes as snacks for lunch and I love them sliced in yogurt.
    20130922-182131.jpg
Tailor and I eat these plain by the handful. They’re great in salads and even better in egg omelets.

Add this freshly made salsa to any salad and it is guaranteed to spice things up!
    20130922-183323.jpg
Yes, I eat lots of fresh fruit! To squeeze more nutrients into your diet, add strawberries, blackberries, or blueberries to a smoothie, yogurt, frozen yogurt, or ice-cream. Yummy!
    20130922-183013.jpg
I go through 2-3 of these a week. For added protein, I add yogurt to my breakfast smoothies, or I’ll make up a yogurt parfait of my own for a healthy morning or afternoon snack.
